Arsenal FC star Mesut Ozil struggled against Manchester United and despite a wonderful start to his North London career, there have been question marks over his big game anonymity. So is Ozil a big game flop or is it just a settling phase for the German?
News columns and tabloids couldn’t get enough of Mesut Ozil for the entire month of September and it was palpable. Record transfer from foreign land, immediate impact and a flurry of assists to accompany his ever-swelling stature, Ozil was the media darling. Yet despite a rosy and honeymoon start to life in England, the German international has looked off colour in the last few weeks and his lack of a grip in the so-called big games has left some of the Arsenal fans desiring more. But that isn’t going to be a problem, as Mesut will only improve from here on. Despite that, it’s fascinating to note how or why Ozil’s performances have lost their fizz in the past month and half. Has the German international proved worthy of his hefty price tag? Or does he even need to? Jaw dropping performances versus Napoli and Norwich has been accompanied by woeful showings against Dortmund and Manchester United. What can one make of all this?
Arsenal have been riding a crest this season and despite defeat in Manchester, the result is unlikely to derail their fabulous yet surprising start to the season. Same holds true for Ozil, who is yet to perform at his consistent best. Ozil has started every game for the club since joining the Gunners, bar the Chelsea game in the Capital One Cup and despite not being a very industrious player, per se, maybe it’s time for him to rest and recharge his batteries. Which is exactly why this international break comes with a wonderful timing. With Germany already having booked their tickets for Brazil next year, Joachim Low is trying new permutations providing much needed rest for Arsenal’s record signing. Despite the travels, Ozil will return to London Colney, a much fresher player and that is enough to reason for Arsene Wenger to cheer after seeing his star man struggle lately.
Against Manchester United, Ozil could hardly muster space to operate, credit for which should also go to Phil Jones, but it wasn’t the first time the German had gone anonymous. In Dortmund too, Ozil could hardly get a foothold for the first hour of the game despite drifting in and around the Dortmund defence. The inconsequential hide and seek eventually paid dividends when Tomas Rosicky found him in space and he pinged a pin point cross for Giroud to assist Ramsey. One moment of skill and genius, one goal. That is what Ozil is capable of and exactly why fans feel hungry for more. That goal onwards Arsenal were in the driving seat and every counter attack was channelized through the German showing how he can change the entire dynamics of a match and grab the baton when presented.
Against Liverpool too, Ozil wasn’t very involved other than making the initial pass for a move to develop or pressing Cissokho for most of the first half. His performance until 57 minutes was average to put it modestly. Yet on 57 minutes he shrugged off his marker, dribbled down the right and fed Ramsey in space, whose finish took the gloss off the assist but in no way was it any less detrimental. The second goal gave Arsenal a much needed breathing space and they went on to win the game 2-0 and yet again Ozil despite having an anonymous outing had had a major say in the final outcome.
Against teams that get too tight on him or mark zones, Ozil runs rampant as Napoli and Norwich found out. Those were two games when Arsenal fans drooled over their summer signing. But once teams start to clog the centre of the pitch, Arsenal and Ozil struggle. West Brom and now more recently Manchester United gave a perfect example of that. Ozil despite pulling himself out to the sidelines often, isn’t someone who can take on fullbacks and race to the byeline before delivering a cross for the striker. Ozil works best between the lines and pockets of space which he harvests on his own and the fact that Walcott is close to a return would be welcome news for the Gunners and Ozil in particular who would be glad to have a runner to find, with his passes. The one game the duo combined in, Walcott had 3 clear sights of goal but had a poor day at the office and ended up scoring none. But nevertheless the promise was enough to keep the Gunners fans hoping.
So far Ozil’s big game influence in England has been remote and one can see why people are having doubts but despite his minimal involvement he has had a telling contribution on the results, speaking volumes of his genius. It’s easy to forget he has been at Arsenal for only 2 months and while other imports take much longer to settle in he has taken to the Premier League, like a fish to water. With an extended rest and a greater zeal to prove his worth after a poor display at Old Trafford, Arsenal fans can hope for their superstar to turn up the volume post-international break. The Christmas period could define Arsenal’s season as the games get bigger in stature, it’s time for the big player to stand up and be counted. Southampton at home could be a perfect start to that.
