Aston Villa have seen their latest offer for Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis rejected, but negotiations are continuing with growing optimism that an agreement can be reached.
According to Florian Plettenberg via X, Aston Villa submitted a proposal worth £20 million plus £4m in add-ons for the 24-year-old England international.
Southampton turned down the package, although there is reportedly a feeling that the two clubs are now moving closer to finding common ground. Villa have identified Harwood-Bellis as one of their options to reinforce Unai Emery’s defence, particularly with Ezri Konsa closing in on a £51m move to Arsenal.
Aston Villa remain confident despite rejected bid
Southampton’s refusal is consistent with their stance throughout the summer as Benfica previously had an offer worth around £17 million rejected for Harwood-Bellis, and the EFL Championship club remain determined to secure an acceptable price for one of their most important players.
However, the defender’s own situation could strengthen Villa’s position. Harwood-Bellis submitted a transfer request following Southampton’s controversial expulsion from the Championship play-offs and is increasingly expected to leave St. Mary’s before the transfer deadline.
His performances last season explain why Aston Villa are pushing to secure his signature. The centre-back made 48 appearances across all competitions in 2025/26, contributing an impressive seven goals and one assist. He was also named the Southern Daily Echo’s Player of the Year.
Harwood-Bellis identified as potential Konsa replacement
Harwood-Bellis’s ability in possession should appeal particularly to Emery. The former Manchester City defender recorded a passing accuracy above 85 per cent last season and is comfortable receiving possession deep before progressing the ball into midfield.
There would nevertheless be a significant adjustment required if he arrives as Konsa’s replacement. The Englishman’s versatility has allowed Aston Villa to use him both centrally and at right-back, whereas Harwood-Bellis is predominantly a specialist centre-back.
There is also a difference in experience. While Konsa has established himself at Premier League and Champions League level, Harwood-Bellis would still have to demonstrate that he can consistently perform at that standard.
The rejection should not necessarily concern Villa if the two clubs are genuinely moving closer to an agreement. Harwood-Bellis is young enough to improve further, already possesses significant senior experience and appears well suited to Emery’s preference for defenders comfortable in possession.
The biggest question is whether Villa see him as a direct Konsa replacement or simply another important defensive option. He cannot replicate all of Konsa’s positional versatility, but at the right price, his age and potential make this a move worth pursuing.
