Arsenal, Chelsea run rule over Julian Alvarez this week

Arsenal and Chelsea reportedly dispatched scouts to watch 26-year-old Argentine international Julian Alvarez in the UEFA Champions League earlier this week.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona are interested in Julian Alvarez. The two Premier League giants sent scouts to watch the Atletico Madrid attacker in the UEFA Champions League clash with Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week, with the Argentine international producing an impressive performance.

How has Julian Alvarez fared at Atletico Madrid?

Julian Alvarez has established himself as one of the world’s best strikers since joining Atletico Madrid from Manchester City in a surprise big-money move in August 2024. However, the 26-year-old has also been prone to bouts of inconsistency, and he has not been at his best in the 2025/26 season.

Nevertheless, the Argentine international has scored 17 goals and provided eight assists in 43 appearances across all competitions thus far in the 2025/26 season. Meanwhile, Alvarez’s stock is sky high, with Arsenal, Barcelona, and Chelsea among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

A man in demand

Arsenal may dip into the market for a versatile attacker in the summer transfer window. While Mikel Arteta has three strikers in his squad, Gabriel Jesus’s long-term future is uncertain. Additionally, Viktor Gyokeres has been inconsistent since arriving from Sporting CP last summer. So, Alvarez has emerged as a viable target for Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Julian Alvarez has been on Barcelona’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, as Robert Lewandowski is in the twilight of his career. So, the Blaugrana should plan for life after the veteran Polish striker. Alvarez has thus reportedly emerged as a top target for Barcelona.

As for Chelsea, the West London club wanted to sign Alvarez before he joined Atletico Madrid. However, the continued interest is surprising, as they signed Liam Delap and Joao Pedro last summer. Additionally, Emanuel Emegha will arrive at Stamford Bridge later this year. So, it is unclear how the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner fits into the scheme of things at Chelsea, even if Delap departs from Stamford Bridge this summer.

The latest report has revealed that Arsenal and Chelsea sent scouts to watch the 26-year-old Argentine international in the UEFA Champions League clash between Atletico Madrid and Tottenham earlier this week. The 2022 FIFA World Cup winner produced an impressive performance, but his preference remains to join Barcelona this summer.
