Chelsea considering Sandro Tonali move

Chelsea may look to sign 25-year-old Italian international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United this year, and they are monitoring his situation closely.

According to a report by Football Insider, Sandro Tonali is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are eager to reinforce their first-team squad by signing a versatile midfielder this year. So, the 25-year-old Newcastle United mainstay has emerged as a target for the West London club, and they are keeping tabs on his situation at St. James’ Park.

How has Sandro Tonali fared at Newcastle United?

Sandro Tonali has established himself as one of the most dependable midfielders in the Premier League since returning from his betting ban last season. The Lodi native has been with the Tyneside outfit for two years, arriving from AC Milan in a deal worth £55 million in July 2023. However, he spent several months on the sidelines in his debut campaign after breaching anti-betting regulations.

The ban did not affect the 25-year-old, whose performances in the middle of the park for Newcastle United have been top-notch whenever he has been available. Tonali has made nearly 100 appearances thus far for the Tyneside outfit while chipping in with seven goals and seven assists.

Meanwhile, the Italian midfielder’s exploits for his club and country have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Widespread reports have heavily linked Tonali with Juventus, with Luciano Spalletti pushing for a deal. However, Chelsea may compete with the Bianconeri for his signature this year.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Chelsea’s interest in Sandro Tonali is somewhat perplexing. The Blues have a stacked midfield unit, with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez being two of the best midfielders in the Premier League. However, Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo have struggled with fitness issues, compelling Enzo Maresca to utilise Reece James in the middle of the park while he was Chelsea’s head coach.

The 2024/25 UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup winners are thus concerned about their midfield depth. Several candidates, including Darryl Bakola, have emerged on Chelsea’s wishlist, with Tonali also being a viable target.

The 25-year-old Italian international is also an appealing target as he may not take long to settle down at Chelsea. However, convincing Newcastle United to part ways with Tonali will be a tall order, and it will be interesting to see if a move across the Premier League is on the cards for the former AC Milan mainstay.
