Aston Villa, Chelsea in transfer tussle to sign Arthur Avom

Aston Villa and Chelsea are interested in signing 21-year-old Cameroonian international Arthur Avom from Ligue 1 club FC Lorient next year.

According to an update by reputed Turkish journalist Ekrem Konur, Aston Villa and Chelsea are keen on signing Arthur Avom. The two Premier League clubs are keen on reinforcing their first-team squads by signing a versatile midfielder next year. So, the 21-year-old FC Lorient prospect has emerged as a target for them.

Apart from Aston Villa and Chelsea, Sunderland, Club Brugge, Stade Rennais, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas are also keen on signing the Yaounde-born midfielder. Meanwhile, FC Lorient will demand around €10-11 million to part ways with the youngster next year.

Who is Arthur Avom?

Arthur Avom has established himself as one of the best young prospects in Ligue 1 since joining FC Lorient from Fauve Azur in July 2024. A native of Yaoune, the youngster spent his formative years in Cameroon before moving to Europe last year. While the 21-year-old had to bide his time before breaking into the first-team squad at the Ligue 1 club, he has not looked back this term.

The Cameroonian international has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for FC Lorient this season, amassing over 1,000 minutes of game time across 16 Ligue 1 outings. Meanwhile, Avom’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs. Aston Villa and Chelsea are among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Aston Villa’s interest in Arthur Avom is understandable. While Unai Emery has a stacked midfield unit, Ross Barkley has struggled with fitness issues during his spell with the West Midlands outfit. Additionally, John McGinn is on the wrong side of 30. Several candidates, including Joey Veerman, have emerged on Aston Villa’s radar, with Avom also a viable target.

As for Chelsea, the Blues have had their sights set on the African midfielder for a long time. The continued interest is perplexing, as Enzo Maresca has a stacked midfield unit in his squad. With Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez nailed on as the first-choice central midfielders, it is unclear if Avom can become a regular for Chelsea.

Apart from Aston Villa and Chelsea, Sunderland, Club Brugge, Stade Rennais, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas are also keen on signing Avom. Meanwhile, FC Lorient will demand around €10-11 million to part ways with the youngster next year. So, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the 21-year-old Cameroonian international.
