Chelsea’s pursuit of Mike Maignan may have stalled following a lack of progress in signing the AC Milan keeper ahead of next summer.
According to Ekrem Konur, Chelsea have not progressed in their efforts to sign Mike Maignan, which has indicated the move for the 30-year-old French international could have stalled. The AC Milan stopper loos destined to leave the San Siro on a Bosman move, with a host of other teams interested in the experienced star.
Chelsea made a significant effort to sign Mike Maignan ahead of their successful Club World Cup campaign. The Blues wanted to take advantage of a mini-window to bring in the 30-year-old French international to solve a then-problematic area in Enzo Maresca’s squad.
Chelsea ended their pursuit of Maignan as they could not agree on a fee with AC Milan, who risked the prospect of seeing the 30-year-old French international leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2026. Now, the Rossoneri are staring at the idea as Maignan is ready to leave the club and is showing no indication of signing a new deal at the San Siro.
The Blues were seen as the favourites to sign the keeper, as they were pushing ahead of the competition to sign Maignan. However, a move from Chelsea might have stalled, given they have not made any progress in talks with the 30-year-old French international’s camp.
It may have come due to the form of Robert Sanchez, who is currently seen as one of the best stoppers in the Premier League. Now, Chelsea might ponder the idea of handing in the long-term keys to the Spaniard rather than risk his departure if Maignan arrives next summer. While the prospect of signing the Frenchman may seem enticing, the club could potentially think about continuity with Sanchez, without shelling out big wages.
What’s next for Mike Maignan?
With Chelsea’s move for Maignan on the verge of stalling, the 30-year-old French international will have other options, as Juventus are seen as a strong contender for the keeper. Bayern Munich are also keen to sign him as they continues to seek a long-term replacement for Manuel Neuer and could see the qualities in Maignan.
Juventus are already contemplating offering an attractive contract and believes that Maignan is very comfortable continuing in Italy. Only time will tell where the France international moves next, as he seems destined to leave Milan on a free transfer during the summer.
