Claudio Echeverri is reportedly eager to rejoin his former side, River Plate, on loan in January amid concerns over his time at Bayer Leverkusen.
According to German Garcia Grova, Manchester City wonderkid Claudio Echeverri is pushing to rejoin River Plate on loan in January. The talented prospect has found game time hard to come by at his current club, Bayer Leverkusen, with the German giants open to letting him leave, although Manchester City may want him to stay in Europe.
Claudio Echeverri was a player that Manchester City agreed a deal for in January 2024, but the attacking midfielder only joined the club in January 2025. Since then, he has managed only three appearances for the club, scoring once in the Club World Cup.
Pep Guardiola and his coaching staff clearly felt the Manchester City wonderkid needed experience playing in Europe and thought it was better to loan him out. The Argentine prospect did join Bayer Leverkusen on loan for the whole season, but Manchester City also rejected offers from the likes of AS Roma.
There were other teams like Borussia Dortmund who angled a move, but it was Bayer Leverkusen, who won the race for the Manchester City wonderkid. Things have not gone to plan for Echeverri, having made four appearances apiece in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
The player has failed to adapt to the rigours of regular European football, with Echeverri now pushing to rejoin former side River Plate on loan in the winter window. The idea might revolve around gaining momentum with his career, which appears stalled at the moment, with the loan clearly not working.
Manchester City’s plans for Claudio Echeverri
Bayer Leverkusen may not oppose the idea of sending Echeverri back to Manchester City, and will not create any obstacles. However, that may not pave the way for the Manchester City wonderkid to pack his bags for a return to Argentina and join River Plate.
Manchester City prefer to send him on another loan to one of the European teams to help him gain the required experience. Surely, there will be a lot of teams that will come into the picture to get the attacking midfielder on board, as a return to River Plate may not materialise for a lot of key reasons.
