Liverpool eyeing Sven Botman as Marc Guehi alternative

Liverpool will reportedly pursue 25-year-old Newcastle United centre-back Sven Botman if they decide against chasing Marc Guehi next year.

According to a report by Record, as relayed by Sport Witness, Sven Botman is the subject of interest from Liverpool. The Reds are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in one of the next two transfer windows. So, the 25-year-old Newcastle United defender has emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit.

Sven Botman and his career so far

Sven Botman has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Newcastle United from LOSC Lille in a deal worth £32 million plus add-ons in July 2022. A native of Badhoevedorp, the Dutchman spent his formative years in the Netherlands, starting his youth career at RKSV Pancratius before graduating from the fabled academy at Ajax.

The 25-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Ajax but became a household name after moving to LOSC Lille. That earned Botman a move to Newcastle United three years ago, but he has struggled with fitness issues in the last two seasons. That has compelled Eddie Howe to use the player sparingly.

The Dutch defender has gradually received more game time, and he has managed over 500 minutes of action in eight appearances thus far in the 2025/26 season. However, despite his fitness issues, Botman’s stock in the market is reasonably high, with Liverpool among the prospective suitors vying for his signature.

Move across the Premier League on the cards?

Liverpool’s interest in Sven Botman is understandable. The Reds are scouring the market for a centre-back after failing to secure Marc Guehi’s services in the summer transfer window. While the Crystal Palace captain remains a target for Liverpool, the Premier League champions face stiff competition from other European bigwigs for his signature.

Recent reports have also claimed that Guehi feels no obligation towards Liverpool despite agreeing to move to Anfield in the summer transfer window. So, the Merseyside outfit must identify alternatives to Guehi, with Botman emerging as a viable target.

However, the Reds have kept their options open, and they are also interested in Zeno Debast, Ousmane Diomande, and Willian Pacho. It will be interesting to see if Botman becomes a top target for Liverpool in the coming weeks, although signing the 25-year-old Dutchman from Newcastle United may be a tall order.
