Morgan Rogers has reportedly opened talks with Aston Villa over a bumper new contract, thus dealing a blow to the prospects of Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
According to a report by Football Insider, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are still interested in Morgan Rogers. The two London giants have been keen on signing the Aston Villa playmaker for several months without succeeding in the chase. The wait will continue for an indefinite period, as the English international is in talks with the West Midlands club over a bumper new contract.
The Villans are “keen to reward the progress” of the Englishman by handing him a new bumper deal despite his poor start to the 2025/26 season. Additionally, the contract talks will enable Aston Villa to thwart Chelsea and Tottenham amid the relentless speculation surrounding Rogers.
Morgan Rogers and his meteoric rise
Morgan Rogers has gone from strength to strength since joining Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in a deal worth £15 million, including add-ons, in February 2024. The 23-year-old did not take long to make his mark at the West Midlands club, and he has established himself as a pivotal figure for Unai Emery in the last 18 months at Villa Park.
The English international has been a mainstay in the final third for Aston Villa in the last 18 months, and he has chipped in with 17 goals and 17 assists in 77 appearances thus far for the West Midlands outfit. Meanwhile, Rogers’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several Premier League bigwigs, including Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
London calling?
Chelsea’s continued interest in Morgan Rogers makes sense. While the Blues heavily reinforced their offensive unit in the summer transfer window, loan arrival Facundo Buonanotte may not be part of Enzo Maresca’s long-term plans, after the West London club excluded him from the UEFA Champions League squad. So, Rogers has emerged as a viable target for Chelsea.
As for Tottenham, the Lilywhites pursued the 23-year-old Englishman in the summer transfer window before they signed Xavi Simons. However, the North London club failed to replace Son Heung-min, and Rogers’s versatility makes him an appealing target. Recent reports have claimed that Tottenham may soon present a bid to secure the Aston Villa playmaker’s services.
However, the English international has opened talks with Aston Villa over a bumper new contract. Even though Rogers has been underwhelming thus far in the 2025/26 season, the Villans want to reward him for his impact in the last 18 months while thwarting Chelsea and Tottenham. So, a move to either London club will unlikely materialise next year.
