Newcastle United will reportedly compete with Liverpool to sign 25-year-old English international Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by The Times, Marc Guehi is the subject of interest of Newcastle United. The Magpies are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 25-year-old Crystal Palace defender has emerged as a target for the South London outfit.
The 2024/25 EFL Cup winners have revived their move to sign the Englishman, with Crystal Palace demanding around £50 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window. Guehi is also a target for Liverpool. However, the two Premier League clubs do not want to pay £50 million to sign him, with Newcastle United setting a limit of £40 million to secure his services.
Marc Guehi and his rise
Marc Guehi has reached a crossroads in his career after entering the final 12 months of his deal with Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old has seen his stock skyrocket since joining the South London outfit from Chelsea in July 2021, having gone from strength to strength in the last four years.
The 25-year-old has turned out over 150 times thus far for Crystal Palace while chipping in with eight goals and four assists. However, Guehi’s contract situation has piqued the attention of several high-profile clubs, with Liverpool and Newcastle United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Liverpool’s interest in Marc Guehi is understandable. The Reds are scouring the market for a centre-back this summer amid uncertainties surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s long-term future. The Premier League champions have already sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, and Virgil van Dijk is approaching the twilight of his career. However, Liverpool will be hesitant to meet Crystal Palace’s valuation to sell Guehi.
As for Newcastle United, several centre-backs are on the wrong side of 30, and Sven Botman has struggled with fitness issues in the last 12 months. Guehi has thus emerged as a viable target for the Tyneside outfit, although Crystal Palace’s asking price of £50 million is an issue. Newcastle United would prefer to sign the 25-year-old Englishman for around £40 million.
Crystal Palace’s insistence to recoup around £50 million may mean negotiations for Guehi’s signature may drag on for weeks. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the English international amid his links with Liverpool and Newcastle United.
