Newcastle United are interested in Piero Hincapie, but any move would prove difficult as Bayer Leverkusen do not plan on selling the defender.
According to Fichajes, Newcastle United are prepared to invest significantly in Piero Hincapie. The versatile Ecuadorian defender has been top-notch during his time in the Bundesliga, with a host of other clubs also chasing his signature, but Bayer Leverkusen are uninterested in selling him at the moment.
Piero Hincapie missed all but two games for Bayer Leverkusen last season, as former boss Xabi Alonso used him in multiple defensive positions. His importance for Bayer Leverkusen often goes under the radar, although the club does feel he’s extremely important for their plans going forward.
As per TBR, Leverkusen are prepared to block any move for the 23-year-old Bundesliga defender, as they do not want to lose another defender following the departure of Jonathan Tah. Hence, some of the top teams from the Premier League are set for a huge blow in pursuit of the Ecuadorian star, including Newcastle United.
Newcastle United are interested in signing the defender, with the report stressing on the fact that they might use the Alexander Isak money to fund a move. The story does state a €40 million idea for the Magpies to sign the Ecuadorian, although Leverkusen had previously told Atletico Madrid to meet his release clause to sign the defender.
Newcastle United may not need strengthening on the left side of the defence, considering they have plenty of options there, including Lewis Hall, Dan Burn and Sven Botman, while Tino Livramento can also feature on that side. They were recently linked with Giovanni Leoni, a right-sided central defender, and a move for such a profile makes more sense from Eddie Howe’s perspective.
Piero Hincapie blow for Premier League clubs
Hincapie had other suitors such as Chelsea, Liverpool and even Tottenham. Quite unsure why the latter are in the mix, considering like Newcastle United, they too are well stocked on the left-hand side of the defence. Meanwhile, Chelsea are close to signing Jorrel Hato, meaning they do not necessarily need someone like Hincapie in their ranks for the time being.
Liverpool were keen, and as they have continued to spend freely in the market, there’s a clear need to reinforce their backline. They are chasing Marc Guehi, with Crystal Palace ready to entertain offers, but the idea of signing a specialist left-sided defender may not be high on their agenda.
