La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old Portuguese international Renato Veiga from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Renato Veiga is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old Chelsea utility man has emerged as a target for Los Rojiblancos.
The Colchoneros are in talks with Chelsea over a possible move for Veiga, with personal terms not an issue for either party. However, Atletico Madrid and Chelsea are €10 million apart in negotiations, with the West London club demanding around €40 million to part ways with last year’s arrival in the summer transfer window, and Atletico hoping to sign him for €30 million.
Renato Veiga and a rollercoaster of a year
Renato Veiga has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Chelsea from FC Basel last summer. While the 21-year-old made his mark whenever he got his opportunities in the first half of the 2024/25 season, he was a backup option for the defensive unit. So, the West London club loaned him to Juventus earlier this year.
The Portuguese international was impressive in the second half of the 2024/25 season, and he got the opportunity to play in his preferred centre-back spot. Veiga turned out 15 times for the Bianconeri while chipping in with one assist. However, a permanent move to the Serie A club has not seen the light of day, and Atletico Madrid will hope to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
La Liga move on the horizon?
Atletico Madrid’s interest in Renato Veiga makes sense. The Colchoneros are scouring the market for a centre-back this summer, even though David Hancko has arrived from Feyenoord this week. With Clement Lenglet not reliable enough and Jose Maria Gimenez on the wrong side of 30, Atletico Madrid must sign a new centre-back this summer, with Veiga emerging as a viable target.
Atletico Madrid mulled over signing Cristian Romero, but a move for the Tottenham defender will not see the light of day. Veiga has thus emerged as a viable alternative, with the Lisbon native keen on moving to Estadio Metropolitano. However, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are yet to find a common ground on the transfer fee, with the West London club demanding €40 million to part ways with the highly-rated defender.
On the other hand, Atletico Madrid would prefer to seal a deal worth €30 million to sign Veiga. With the two clubs €10 million apart in negotiations, it will be interesting to see if they can wrap up an agreement in the coming weeks for the 21-year-old Portuguese international.
