Former Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is reportedly on the cusp of completing a Bosman move to West Ham United in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Callum Wilson is the subject of interest from West Ham United. The Hammers are keen on reinforcing their offensive unit by signing a striker in the summer transfer window. So, the 33-year-old former Newcastle United centre-forward has emerged as a target for the East London club.
The injury-struck Englishman has also been a target for Leeds United. However, the experienced centre-forward has decided to snub Leeds United to join West Ham United, with the two parties striking an agreement in principle over a contract that will “see him earn a minimal wage, albeit with large appearance money”.
Callum Wilson and his career so far
Callum Wilson has remained a prolific striker even though he has struggled with fitness issues in the last few years. The Englishman never failed to make his mark when he took to the pitch for Bournemouth and Newcastle United. However, fitness issues have blighted him for over half a decade, with the 2024/25 campaign producing a horror story.
The 33-year-old has 141 career goals while chipping in with 48 assists in nearly 400 appearances for Tamworth FC, Kettering Town, Coventry City, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United. However, Wilson has become a free agent after his contract with Newcastle United expired. The English striker has had no shortage of suitors, with Leeds United and West Ham United vying for his signature in the summer transfer window.
What next?
Leeds United’s interest in Callum Wilson was understandable. The Whites have been scouring the market for a striker this summer, even though Joel Piroe was instrumental in the West Yorkshire club’s 2024/25 EFL Championship title-winning campaign. However, with Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph not in Daniel Farke’s plans, Leeds United must sign a centre-forward this summer.
As for West Ham United, Niclas Fullkrug struggled with fitness issues in his debut season, and Evan Ferguson failed to make his mark during his loan spell in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign. So, West Ham must sign a striker this summer, with Wilson on the cusp of completing a Bosman move.
West Ham and Wilson have an agreement in principle over a contract that will “see him earn a minimal wage, albeit with large appearance money”. So, with the 33-year-old Englishman set to sign a pay-as-you-play deal, he will hope to resurrect his stuttering fortunes and put his injury woes behind him.
