Manchester City will reportedly look to sign 26-year-old Italian international Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Gianluigi Donnarumma is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Citizens are scouring the market for a goalkeeper amid uncertainties surrounding Ederson Moraes’s long-term future, and they have set their sights on the PSG mainstay. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Bayern Munich may also be part of the battle for the Italian goalkeeper’s signature in the summer transfer window.
Gianluigi Donnarumma and his meteoric rise
Gianluigi Donnarumma has established himself as one of the most revered goalkeepers in the world in the past decade. The Castellammare di Stabia native broke into the first-team squad at AC Milan as a 16-year-old and quickly became the undisputed first-choice stopper at the Serie A club. However, he left the Rossoneri as a free agent in July 2021, joining PSG in a Bosman move.
The Italian international has turned out over 150 times thus far for PSG while keeping 52 clean sheets and conceding 152 goals. Meanwhile, Donnarumma’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Manchester City will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature in the summer transfer window, with Bayern Munich and Chelsea also in the conversation.
A man in demand
Bayern Munich must plan for life after Manuel Neuer, with the legendary German goalkeeper in the twilight of his career. So, Donnarumma is a viable target, with the Bundesliga champions closely monitoring the 26-year-old shot-stopper’s situation amid his protracted contract talks with PSG.
Meanwhile, intermediaries have offered Chelsea the chance to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma, with recent reports suggesting the Blues are keen on securing his services in the summer transfer window. While Enzo Maresca has over half a dozen shot-stoppers in his squad, none of his current options have been convincing enough to become the first-choice goalkeeper. So, the PSG star is an option worth considering for Chelsea.
As for Manchester City, Ederson Moraes faces an uncertain future at the Etihad, while Stefan Ortega will unlikely become the first-choice goalkeeper. So, the Citizens have been in talks to re-sign James Trafford from Burnley. However, Donnarumma is also a viable target for Manchester City, with the Premier League club initiating the discussions with his entourage.
With Manchester City launching the offensive to sign the 26-year-old Italian international, Bayern Munich and Chelsea may fall behind in the battle. It will be interesting to see if the Citizens beat the competition to his signature in the summer transfer window.
