Versatile Chelsea defender Renato Veiga is reportedly ready to join La Liga club Atletico Madrid in the summer transfer window.
According to an update by reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Renato Veiga is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants are eager to bolster their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old Chelsea utility man has emerged as a target for Los Rojiblancos.
The Colchoneros are in talks with Chelsea over a possible move for Veiga, who has approved the move to Estadio Metropolitano this summer. Personal terms will thus not pose an issue for Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Chelsea will demand around €40 million to part ways with last year’s arrival in the summer transfer window.
Renato Veiga and his whirlwind year
Renato Veiga has endured a meteoric year since joining Chelsea from FC Basel last summer. While the 21-year-old was a utility man for the West London club in the first half of the 2024/25 season due to his ability to play as a left-back, a centre-back, and a holding midfielder, he was a backup option for Enzo Maresca. In addition, he was unsettled at the West London club as he wanted to play as a centre-back.
The Portuguese international got that opportunity in the second half of the 2024/25 season after Juventus signed him on loan earlier this year. Veiga turned out 15 times for the Bianconeri while chipping in with one assist. However, a permanent move to the Serie A club has not seen the light of day, and Atletico Madrid will hope to secure his services in the summer transfer window.
La Liga move on the horizon?
Atletico Madrid’s interest in Renato Veiga is understandable. The Colchoneros are combing the market for a centre-back this summer, as Diego Simeone has only three centre-backs in his squad. So, Cristian Romero has been the top target for Atletico Madrid, with Los Rojiblancos keen on signing a central defender this summer.
However, Atletico Madrid will not sign the Tottenham defender this summer, and they have set their sights on Veiga. The Chelsea utility man has now boosted the Spanish club’s prospects, as he is ready to move to Estadio Metropolitano this summer. Meanwhile, the West London club will demand around €40 million to part ways with the highly-rated defender.
Chelsea’s asking price of €40 million makes Veiga an appealing target for his suitors, considering his versatility and potential. With the West London club and Atletico Madrid already in talks for a move, it will be interesting to see if they strike an agreement soon, considering personal terms will pose no issue for Los Rojiblancos.
