Atletico Madrid approach Chelsea for Renato Veiga talks

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly interested in signing 21-year-old Portuguese international Renato Veiga from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by AS, as relayed by Sport Witness, Renato Veiga is the subject of interest from Atletico Madrid. The Colchoneros are keen on reinforcing their defensive unit by signing a centre-back in the summer transfer window. So, the 21-year-old Chelsea utility man has emerged as a target for Los Rojiblancos.

The Spanish giants have approached Chelsea to open talks over a possible move for Veiga after identifying the versatile defender as an alternative to Cristian Romero. With the move for Cristian Romero collapsing, the Lisbon native has emerged as an alternative for Atletico Madrid. Chelsea will demand around €35 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window.

Renato Veiga and his search for stability

Renato Veiga has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Chelsea from FC Basel last summer. While the 21-year-old immediately became a utility man for the West London club due to his ability to play as a left-back, a centre-back, and a holding midfielder, he was a backup option for Enzo Maresca. In addition, the youngster is determined to carve out a career for himself as a centre-back.

That meant the Portuguese international pushed for a winter exit, and Juventus signed him on loan earlier this year. Veiga turned out 15 times for the Bianconeri while chipping in with one assist. However, a permanent move to the Serie A club has not seen the light of day, and Atletico Madrid will aim to secure his services in the summer transfer window.

La Liga adventure beckons?

Atletico Madrid’s interest in Renato Veiga makes sense. The Colchoneros have been combing the market for a centre-back this summer, as Diego Simeone has only three centre-backs in his squad. So, Los Rojiblancos can do with a new central defender, and Cristian Romero has been the top target for the Spanish outfit.

However, the move for the Tottenham defender has collapsed, forcing Atletico Madrid to look elsewhere for a new centre-back. Veiga has thus emerged as a viable alternative, and they have opened talks with Chelsea over a possible move for the highly-rated utility man. Meanwhile, the Blues want around €35 million to part ways with the youngster.

Chelsea’s asking price of €35 million makes Veiga an appealing target for his suitors, considering his versatility and potential. With the West London club and Atletico Madrid going “back and forth”, it will be interesting to see if a summer move sees the light of day.
