Aston Villa and Newcastle United will reportedly compete with Barcelona to sign 29-year-old Dutch wing-back Denzel Dumfries from Serie A club Inter Milan this summer.
According to an update by French journalist Sebastien Vidal, Denzel Dumfries is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The reigning La Liga champions are scouring the market for a new right-back this summer and have set their sights on the 29-year-old Inter Milan wide player. However, the Blaugrana will face stiff competition from Aston Villa and Newcastle United for the Dutchman’s signature.
Denzel Dumfries and his Serie A journey so far
Denzel Dumfries has established himself as one of the most productive wing-backs in Serie A since joining Inter Milan from PSV Eindhoven in August 2021. While the 29-year-old has been in and out of the starting lineup in the last four years, he has been a dependable performer from the right flank.
The Dutch wing-back has turned out over 150 times thus far for Inter Milan while chipping in with 22 goals and 26 assists. However, Dumfries faces an uncertain future at San Siro, as he has a meagre release clause in his contract with the Serie A giants. The situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs, including Barcelona, Aston Villa, and Newcastle United.
A man in demand
Barcelona will dip into the market for a right-back in the summer transfer window. While Jules Kounde has been a revelation in the position, Hansi Flick wants another top-class option for the spot. So, Dumfries has emerged as a viable target, and his age profile makes him the ideal candidate to compete with Kounde.
Meanwhile, Denzel Dumfries has been on Aston Villa’s radar for a long time. The continued interest is understandable, even though the West Midlands outfit signed Andres Garcia earlier this year. However, the Inter Milan wide player will be an upgrade on Garcia and Matty Cash, making him an appealing option for Aston Villa.
As for Newcastle United, the Magpies are in a spot of bother over Valentino Livramento’s long-term future amid his links with Manchester City. Several candidates, including Nicolo Savona, have emerged on the Tyneside outfit’s radar. However, Dumfries is also a viable target for Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, the 29-year-old Dutchman’s release clause expires in a few days, and the talks to sign him have begun. It will be interesting to see where Dumfries lands if he leaves Inter Milan amid his links with Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Barcelona.
