Nico Schlotterbeck is reportedly in advanced talks with Borussia Dortmund over a new contract, which could end Newcastle United’s chase of the defender.
According to Football Insider, Nico Schlotterbeck could be set for a stay at Borussia Dortmund as the two parties are in advanced talks over a new deal. Newcastle United were one of the clubs interested, with the Premier League side now likely to look elsewhere.
Nico Schlotterbeck has been on the rise since moving to Borussia Dortmund from SC Freiburg in 2022. He has developed into a top-class centre-back for his club and country, with the defender now an established member of the German setup.
The centre-back will enter the final two years of his deal at Borussia Dortmund, with heavy links to some of the Premier League clubs already being reported. Liverpool were keen on Schlotterbeck a while back as they saw him as an ideal replacement for Virgil van Dijk when the Dutchman was still on the ropes about renewing.
With Virgil van Dijk now committed to the club, there might not be a need to sign Nico Schlotterbeck from Liverpool’s perspective. Newcastle United are also interested as Eddie Howe continues to search for a top-notch centre-back that gives him a big presence at the back. The 25-year-old defender does seem like a solid addition for the Magpies, with considerable doubts over Sven Botman’s fitness the main issue here.
The Magpies are looking at other options with Howe pushing the club to sign Marc Guehi. The report does state that Schlotterbeck could be in line for a new deal at Dortmund, which could be a potential reason for Newcastle United to look elsewhere.
Nico Schlotterbeck to sign new Borussia Dortmund deal?
As per the report, Schlotterbeck and Dortmund are in advanced talks to agree on a new deal, as there are a lot of facets to this news. For starters, the 25-year-old is happy at the Bundesliga cub and may want to continue his career here because of the regularity at which he plays here as well as the competitiveness of the Bundesliga, while Dortmund were always keen on keeping him.
His recent injury that will keep him out until October could also be a major issue ahead of any potential transfer in the summer. While Newcastle United are still interested in him knowing about his fitness condition may not end up benefitting Dortmund who may have had to sell for less. Hence, the idea of a new deal could suit all parties.
