Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City have made significant progress in contract renewal talks with their attacking sensation Nico O’Reilly.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City are closing in on a new deal for Nico O’Reilly. The young attacking midfielder has enjoyed a sensational rise at the club, who are now keen to secure his long-term future with an improved contract.
O’Reilly has been a part of the Manchester City setup since 2013. He has gone up the ranks at some pace and is currently a part of their under-21s. While he is yet to be promoted to their first team, the 20-year-old has featured in a total of 12 games for Pep Guardiola’s team, and he even has five goal contributions at the highest level.
His sensational performances at the youth as well as the senior level had put him on the radar of Chelsea, who are constantly on the lookout for young players with massive potential. The Blues did make a move to sign him during the winter transfer window.
While Chelsea were close to reaching an agreement with Manchester City, Guardiola’s side reportedly insisted on a buy-back clause, which Chelsea were unwilling to accept. More importantly, the player himself turned down the London club’s approach in favour of staying at the Manchester-based club.
O’Reilly is close to signing a new deal at Manchester City
After Nico O’Reilly turned down a move to Stamford Bridge, Manchester City initiated contract renewal talks with the 20-year-old attacking midfielder, who can feature in a variety of roles. Guardiola’s team are confident about tying the breakout star down to a new long-term deal.
City have been in talks with his camp, and they have made significant progress in recent weeks. The Citizens are in no rush as his current deal runs until the summer of 2028, and they won’t be under any pressure to sell him in the summer.
Having said that, they are still working hard to reward him for his sensational rise and, in the process, secure his long-term future. O’Reilly is expected to be officially a part of Guardiola’s squad next season, and he will be eager to establish himself as a key figure in the team.
