Tottenham eyeing surprise move for Renato Veiga

Tottenham Hotspur will reportedly look to sign 21-year-old Portuguese utility man Renato Veiga from Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Renato Veiga is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites are scouring the market for a centre-back heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Portuguese utility man. In addition, Brighton & Hove Albion are also keen on signing the youngster from Chelsea amid his exploits for Juventus.

Renato Veiga and his Chelsea career so far

Renato Veiga has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Chelsea from FC Basel last summer. A native of Lisbon, the versatile defender spent his formative years in Portugal, passing through the academies at four clubs and graduating from the youth division at Sporting CP.

However, the 21-year-old utility man rose in prominence in Switzerland, making his mark in his debut season with FC Basel before Chelsea sealed a shock move for his signature. Enzo Maresca utilised Veiga in multiple positions, but the player sought a winter exit as he wanted to start as a centre-back.

Juventus sealed a loan move for the Portuguese international in the winter transfer window, and he has turned out eight times thus far for the Bianconeri. The youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known outfits across Europe. Premier League clubs, in particular, are keen on signing Veiga, with Tottenham Hotspur among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

Move across London on the horizon?

Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Renato Veiga is somewhat surprising. While Radu Dragusin is a long-term absentee, Kevin Danso will complete a permanent move in the summer transfer window. In addition, Cristian Romero faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium amid his links with Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid.

So, Tottenham should comb the market for a centre-back in the summer transfer window, with several candidates, including Yusuf Akcicek, emerging as targets. However, Veiga is also worth considering, as he can reprise other roles in emergency situations.

However, Tottenham will face stiff competition from Brighton & Hove Albion for 21-year-old Portuguese international. In addition, recent reports have linked Veiga with AC Milan. So, it will be surprising to see him remain at Chelsea beyond the summer transfer window.
