Johnny Cardoso wants Tottenham move, Real Betis set deadline

Johnny Cardoso is reportedly keen on joining Tottenham Hotspur in the summer transfer window, although they must sign the 23-year-old from Real Betis by July 10.

According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Johnny Cardoso is the subject of interest from Tottenham Hotspur. The Lilywhites have a non-mandatory purchase option to sign the 23-year-old midfielder from La Liga club Real Betis in the summer transfer window. However, the Andalusian giants have imposed a deadline on the North London outfit, telling them to seal the deal by July 10.

Johnny Cardoso has established himself as one of the best young midfielders in La Liga since joining Real Betis from Internacional in January 2024. The Denville native hit the ground running at the Benito Villamarin Stadium, taking no time to become a regular in the middle of the park for Los Verdiblancos.

The 23-year-old has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months, and he has made his mark in his 31 outings this term, chipping in with two goals and one assist. In addition, Cardoso has become a mainstay in the middle of the park for his national side, making 18 appearances for the USA.

However, the USMNT international’s long-term future has been uncertain, even though Tottenham Hotspur obtained a non-mandatory purchase option to sign him for £20.8 million when they sold Giovani Lo Celso to Real Betis. The young midfielder has also piqued the attention of several other clubs, with recent reports linking him with La Liga champions Real Madrid.

Tottenham Hotspur can do with a player like Johnny Cardoso. While the Lilywhites want to tie Rodrigo Bentancur to a new long-term contract, Yves Bissouma faces an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium heading into the summer transfer window. The two parties will likely engage in showdown talks in the coming weeks.

So, Cardoso is a viable target for Tottenham, with recent reports claiming they are ready to activate their purchase clause to seal a permanent deal for the USMNT international.
