Chelsea make initial move to sign Tijjani Reijnders

Premier League heavyweights Chelsea have reportedly launched their move to sign 26-year-old Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders from Serie A club AC Milan.

According to a report by Calciomercato, Tijjani Reijnders is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the AC Milan midfielder. They have already submitted an enquiry for the Dutch international. However, Barcelona and Manchester City will compete with the West London club.

Tijjani Reijnders and his impact at AC Milan

Tijjani Reijnders has been one of the best midfielders in Serie A since joining AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in July 2023. The Dutchman has been a rare bright spot in the last 18 months amid the inconsistent results of the Rossoneri during his spell at San Siro.

The 26-year-old has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for AC Milan while chipping in with 19 goals and 13 assists. Meanwhile, Reijnders’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Chelsea, Barcelona, and Manchester City will be one of the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window, with the Blues submitting an enquiry.

A man in demand

Recent reports have claimed that Hansi Flick wants Barcelona to sign the Dutch midfielder in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s future. However, Barcelona might not have the funds to afford AC Milan’s asking price of €80 million.

Meanwhile, Manchester City’s interest in Tijjani Reijnders is understandable. The Premier League champions will rebuild their squad in the summer transfer window after enduring a disastrous 2024/25 campaign. Mateo Kovacic, Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes, and Kalvin Phillips are on the chopping block, and Reijnder is an option worth considering for Manchester City.

As for Chelsea, the West London club recently joined the race to secure the Dutchman’s services in the summer transfer window. With Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Andrey Santos, and Carney Chukwuemeka facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge, Reijnders is a viable target. In addition, Chelsea can offer him a significant hike on his €3.5 million-a-year wages.

Manchester City can also offer the 26-year-old Dutch midfielder a reasonably higher salary than €3.5 million. Meanwhile, Chelsea and Manchester City should have the funds to afford AC Milan’s asking price of €80 million. However, with Chelsea submitting an enquiry, they might have overtaken City and Barcelona in the battle.
