Arsenal and Aston Villa retain interest in the services of Wolves mainstay Matheus Cunha despite disciplinary issues.
According to a report from Football Insider, Matheus Cunha’s disciplinary issues are unlikely to have put off major suitors Arsenal and Aston Villa. They remain keen on signing the Wolves star, who has been doing wonders on the pitch.
While things were not that great for Cunha at Atletico Madrid, the move to Wolves has certainly helped his cause. He arrived at the English club at the start of 2023. While it was an initial loan deal, the move became permanent in the summer of 2023.
He has featured in a total of 85 matches for the Wolverhampton-based club and has contributed towards 44 goals (31 goals, 13 assists). In the ongoing campaign, he has been involved in 29 matches and has 15 goals and four assists.
Cunha could make a move in the summer
The Brazilian’s impressive performances have put him on the radar of multiple top clubs in the country. While he prefers playing as a number nine, the 25-year-old is capable enough to feature anywhere in attack. Arsenal and Aston Villa are both keen on his signature. They even tried signing him in January, but the player decided to stay with the Wolves until the end of the season.
While he did end up signing a new deal last month, and his contract now runs until the summer of 2029, he could still be on the move next summer as his contract includes a £62.5 million release clause. The player is keen on playing for a bigger club, he wants to compete in the Champions League, which suggests he could be open to a move ahead of next season.
Arsenal want a new number nine. Mikel Arteta is looking for a proven goal scorer, and he would certainly love to have a striker who has already proven himself in the Premier League. While Villa did add Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio to their squad in the winter, they could return to their partner club ahead of next season.
As a result, they could once again be in the market for a star forward, and Cunha could be a great addition to their squad. Both clubs have been closely monitoring him ahead of a potential transfer, but his recent disciplinary issues may have put off his major suitors.
Arsenal & Villa retain interest despite recent issues
He was sent off their FA Cup clash against Bournemouth a few days back after hitting out at Milos Kerkez, and he could be set for an extended ban. This is not the first instance of him getting banned, as the 25-year-old was involved in a clash with an Ipswich Town staff earlier in the season, which saw him get banned for two matches.
These days, clubs tend to look at a player’s attitude before pushing for his signature. But, as per the report, these issues haven’t put off Arsenal or Aston Villa. Both remain interested in him and could knock on Wolves’ door ahead of next season.
