Fulham will reportedly compete with Sporting CP to sign 23-year-old Greek international Georgios Vagiannidis from Panathinaikos in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Football Insider, Georgios Vagiannidis is the subject of interest from Fulham. The Cottagers are scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding Kenny Tete’s long-term future. However, the West London club will face stiff competition from Sporting CP for the Greek international.
Who is Georgios Vagiannidis?
Georgios Vagiannidis has found a stable footing since rejoining Panathinaikos from Inter Milan in a Bosman move in September 2021. A native of Athens, he spent his formative years in Greece and graduated from the youth division at Panathinaikos. However, the youngster’s spell with Inter Milan was underwhelming, and he returned to his homeland a few years ago.
The 23-year-old has become a mainstay at the back for Panathinaikos, and he has turned out nearly 100 times thus far for the Super League giants while chipping in with three goals and three assists. Vagiannidis’s exploits have also helped him break into his national side, with the youngster making his senior bow for Greece last year.
Meanwhile, the Greek full-back’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Fulham will be among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window. However, the West London outfit will face stiff competition from Sporting CP for his signature.
London calling?
Fulham’s interest in Georgios Vagiannidis is understandable. The Cottagers are scouring the market for a right-back heading into the summer transfer window amid uncertainties surrounding Kenny Tete’s long-term future. The Dutch defender is currently on the sidelines due to a long-term injury. However, he has entered the final six months of his contract.
With Timothy Castagne the only other out-and-out right-back in Marco Silva’s squad, Fulham can do with a new option for the position. So, Vagiannidis has emerged as a viable target for the West London outfit.
However, the Cottagers face stiff competition from Sporting CP for the 23-year-old Greek international, with Ajax, Zenit St. Petersburg, and Botafogo also vying for his signature. It will be interesting to see where Vagiannidis lands if he leaves Panathinaikos in the summer transfer window.
