West Ham United in transfer tussle to sign Jonathan Burkardt

West Ham United will reportedly compete with AC Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt to sign 24-year-old German striker Jonathan Burkardt from Bundesliga club FSV Mainz 05.

According to a report by German outlet BILD, Jonathan Burkardt is the subject of interest from West Ham United. AC Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt are also keen on signing the FSV Mainz 05 striker in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, the Bundesliga club will demand around €50 million to part ways with the German international.

Jonathan Burkardt and his recent progress

Jonathan Burkardt has established himself as one of the best young strikers in the Bundesliga since breaking into the first-team squad at FSV Mainz 05. A native of Darmstadt, he spent most of his formative years in his hometown but graduated from the youth division at FSV Mainz 05 after joining the Bundesliga club in 2014.

The 24-year-old has made considerable progress in the last few seasons, with his exploits helping him break into his national side. Burkardt has been excellent thus far this season, contributing to 18 goals in 21 appearances across all competitions, finding the back of the net 15 times and providing three assists.

Meanwhile, the German striker’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League clubs, in particular, have been keen on signing the FSV Mainz 05 attacker, with West Ham United among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.

London calling?

West Ham United’s interest in Jonathan Burkardt makes sense. The Hammers are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window. Michail Antonio, Danny Ings, and Niclas Fullkrug are on the wrong side of 30, with the latter struggling to make his mark since arriving from Borussia Dortmund last summer.

While Evan Ferguson arrived at the London Stadium from Brighton & Hove Albion this past winter, the Republic of Ireland international will likely return to the Amex Stadium after the 2024/25 season ends. So, several candidates, including Jonathan David, are on West Ham’s radar, with Burkardt also a viable target.

However, the 24-year-old German international will not come cheap, with Mainz demanding around €50 million to part ways with him in the summer transfer window. In addition, West Ham will face stiff competition from AC Milan and Eintracht Frankfurt for the in-form attacker.
