The 33-year-old has set his sights on representing Belgium in what would be his third World Cup, and he believes staying in the Premier League will give him the best chance to maintain peak physical and technical sharpness. De Bruyne has endured an injury-plagued season but remains a crucial figure in Pep Guardiola’s setup, with the City boss eager to keep him for his experience and leadership.
Manchester City ready to offer extension with reduced wages
According to the Daily Mirror, despite De Bruyne’s contract expiring this summer, Manchester City are willing to offer him a one-year extension. However, to stay at the club, he would need to accept a significant pay cut.
The player’s current wages stand at £375,000 per week, but Manchester City are expected to propose a new deal worth £150,000 per week, though it will likely include performance-based bonuses to keep the financial package competitive.
Guardiola has spoken highly of De Bruyne’s importance, emphasising the role experienced players like him will play as City transitions into a new phase. “There are players here that are over 30, but they are part of the future of this club,” Guardiola stated. “Kevin and the club will decide on his future, but I expect him to be here next season.”
In January, Kevin De Bruyne admitted that he had yet to engage in contract talks with Manchester City. His primary focus had been on recovering from injury, but with his fitness improving, discussions are expected to take place soon.
A decision that balances family and career
Last year, Kevin De Bruyne acknowledged that he was open to the idea of a move to Saudi Arabia, citing family considerations. His wife, Michele, had expressed interest in an “exotic adventure,” and the Belgian playmaker admitted that financial incentives could play a role in his decision, especially in the twilight years of his career.
However, with his eldest child growing up in England and deeply connected to Manchester, De Bruyne must weigh the impact of relocating his family against the prospect of continuing his legacy at City. At this stage, remaining in the Premier League appears to be the more attractive option, particularly if it helps him stay in top shape for the 2026 World Cup.
Given his injury struggles, some may question whether Manchester City should invest in another year of De Bruyne. However, the Belgian remains one of the best creative midfielders in the world when fit, and his vision, passing range, and leadership are assets the Premier League champions will struggle to replace.
