Tottenham could potentially sign midfield target Morten Hjulmand for a lower fee than his release clause as Sporting CP are resigned to losing him.
According to Jornal de Noticias via Sport Witness, Morten Hjulmand could leave Sporting CP for less than his €80 million release clause in the summer. The Portuguese club resigned to losing him one way or another in the close season, as Tottenham has a keen interest in him after a recent scouting mission.
Morten Hjulmand has been a sensational player for Sporting CP ever since making his move from US Lecce during the summer window of 2023. He has been the rock in the middle of the park for the club and has lifted the league title under the leadership of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim, now at Manchester United, had been keen on Hjulmand since his appointment as the club’s new manager. However, the Red Devils are not alone in the mix. Tottenham are the one showing great interest in signing the 25-year-old defensive midfielder following a recent scouting mission to watch the player first-hand.
Hjulmand is a player of interest from Ange Postecoglou’s side, as the news of his availability for a lesser price than his €80 million release clause would have Tottenham exploring further. The real price of the 25-year-old defensive midfielder remains unclear as Sporting CP are yet to make it known what they seek to demand for the midfielder.
Tottenham have been in the market to revamp their midfield options as there are doubts over Yves Bissouma’s application on the pitch. Hence, Postecoglou would want a new face, as the 25-year-old defensive midfielder also holds the promise of a long-term future. The only drawback is that he has a visible tattoo of arch-rivals Arsenal on his left shoulder, which is a well-known fact around footballing circles.
Will Tottenham sign a defensive midfielder?
The signs are evident that Tottenham are keen to land a new midfielder who can control games and provide the right tempo for Postecoglou’s operation. Hjulmand being one, Spurs are also keen on Pablo Barrios, although the Atletico Madrid star will be a costly affair.
Colombian Richard Rios is also a target, while there’s a big admiration for soon-to-be free agent Angel Gomes, who has been of interest to Tottenham for a long time. Either way, Spurs are expected to land a new midfielder who can bring in action-packed performances in the middle of the park, as it could be one of the many names, including Hjulmand.
