Chelsea wanted Marc Casado in January

Chelsea were reportedly interested in Marc Casado in January and could retain an interest in the Barcelona midfielder ahead of the summer.

According to Cadenaser, Chelsea reportedly tried an approach for Marc Casado in January, but they were also interested last summer. The Catalan midfielder is eager to fulfil his dream of being an important player for Barcelona, and his current stature with the club will make him an untouchable player.

Chelsea have continued their trend of signing some of the best young profiles in world football. The Blues do have a wide network that helps them identify some top emerging stars from around the world. However, in the January market, the Blues were looking within Europe and were linked with a number of stars.

One of them happened to be Marc Casado, who has continued to attract big interest following an impressive breakthrough season with Barcelona. He was reportedly on the verge of leaving back in the summer, only for Hansi Flick to persuade him to stay, and so far, that decision has been a resounding success.

Casado has made himself a key part of Barcelona’s season as they are hunting for the La Liga title and has helped them immensely in the Champions League. In any case, he was the subject of interest from Chelsea back in the summer, and the Blues approached in January without any success.

Barcelona had no interest in selling Casado well before the January window had opened, as by then, the 21-year-old midfield prodigy had been convinced he could reach great heights at the club. In any case, Chelsea may have tried their luck with an approach, especially given that the Catalan club had its share of financial troubles before the winter market opened.

Chelsea still looking for a new young midfielder

Casado might have been a miss for Chelsea, but they are looking at other midfielder names in the market, such as Atletico Madrid’s Pablo Barrios. They did sign Mathis Amougou in January, but they had set sights on Dario Essugo before the arrival of the former.

Chelsea are likely to continue their search for bright young talents much similar to Casado in the market, as they are keener than ever to keep building on their ambitious project. As for the Casado deal, there was no chance for Barcelona to sanction the deal unless any club came through and paid the €100 million release clause in the 21-year-old midfield prodigy’s contract.
