Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United reportedly believe they have missed the golden opportunity to win the race to secure the services of Lille striker Jonathan David.
According to a report by Give Me Sport, Jonathan David has a growing market due to his impending free-agent status. Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United are keen on signing the LOSC Lille striker. However, the two London clubs believe they might have missed the golden opportunity to secure the Canadian striker’s services.
The rise and rise of Jonathan David
Jonathan David has been exceptional since joining LOSC Lille from KAA Gent in August 2020. The young striker has established himself as one of the best players in Ligue 1 in the last four and a half years, with his performances being instrumental in Les Dogues’ fortunes.
The 29-year-old has been incredible thus far this term, contributing to 29 goals in 34 outings across all competitions by finding the back of the net 20 times and providing nine assists. However, the former KAA Gent striker’s long-term future at LOSC Lille is uncertain after entering the final six months of his contract with the Ligue 1 club.
The two parties will unlikely seal an agreement over a new deal, and the situation has piqued the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Canadian international, with Tottenham Hotspurs and West Ham United among the prospective suitors for his signature.
London calling?
Tottenham Hotspur’s interest in Jonathan David makes sense. The North London club signed Dominic Solanke last summer, while Mathys Tel arrived from Bayern Munich earlier this month. However, while the Lilywhites might complete a permanent deal for Tel this summer, they must keep their options open. So, David has emerged as a viable target for Tottenham.
As for West Ham United, Evan Ferguson bolstered the East London club’s offensive unit in the winter transfer window. However, it is not certain the Republic of Ireland international will complete a permanent move this summer. So, David is an option worth considering for West Ham United.
However, Tottenham and West Ham fear they have missed a golden opportunity to sign the 25-year-old Canadian international. The two London club’s stance makes sense, with recent reports claiming the LOSC Lille striker has advanced talks to join Barcelona. So, it will be interesting to see what the future has in store for David.
