Newcastle United eye Lucas Perri swoop after failed winter move

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing 27-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri from Ligue 1 club Lyon in the summer transfer window.

According to a report by Jorge Nicola, as relayed by Fogao Net, Lucas Perri is the subject of interest from Newcastle United. The Magpies are scouring the market for a goalkeeper heading into the summer transfer window. So, the Lyon shot-stopper has emerged as a target for the Tyneside outfit, having also pursued his signature in the last few weeks.

Who is Lucas Perri?

Lucas Perri has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in Ligue 1 since joining Lyon from Botafogo in January 2024. The South American shot-stopper has gone from strength to strength in the last 12 months, establishing himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for Les Gones.

The 27-year-old has turned out 28 times across all competitions this term for Lyon while keeping nine clean sheets and conceding 34 goals. Meanwhile, Perri’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe.

Newcastle United wanted to sign the Brazilian goalkeeper in the winter transfer window before the deal failed to see the light of day. The Magpies remain keen on signing the Lyon shot-stopper, and Les Gones might cash in on him this summer amid the need to evade relegation from Ligue 1.

Premier League move on the horizon?

Newcastle United’s interest in Lucas Perri is understandable. The Magpies have been keen on reinforcing their goalkeeping unit since last summer, even though they signed John Ruddy and Odysseas Vlachodimos. However, Martin Dubravka faces an uncertain future at St. James’ Park, while Nick Pope is on the wrong side of 30.

So, several candidates, including James Trafford, have been on Newcastle United’s radar, with the Tyneside outfit also attempting to sign Perri in the winter transfer window. Meanwhile, a summer move might materialise, with Lyon demanding around €20-30 million to part ways with the South American shot-stopper.

The Ligue 1 club’s asking price to sell Perri is understandable, considering he is at the peak of his powers. It will be interesting to see if Newcastle United are ready to cough up €20-30 million to sign the 27-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.
