Manchester United contemplate Kobbie Mainoo summer sale

Manchester United could be tempted to sell key academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo in the summer if they receive a hefty offer from suitors

According to Fichajes, Manchester United are prepared to sell some of their homegrown stars, including Kobbie Mainoo, to fund a big summer splurge. The Red Devils are likely to demand at least £80 million for the academy graduate, as Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford are the other players mentioned in the report.

Manchester United are in a tricky position after the arrival of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager is intent on rebuilding the squad but also wants to keep hold of some of his top young talents. Those include homegrown stars like Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, as they would need a lot of funds to bring in new players next summer.

The new management under INEOS is particularly cautious of overspending, although they are aware of the need for large funds to strengthen the current squad as Amorim wants. Hence, they are willing to make some sacrifices, including the big sales of some homegrown talents like Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Mainoo.

Sticking with Mainoo, Manchester United are also willing to prioritise a new contract for the midfielder, as the club sees him as a key asset. Even with that, there’s no denying that INEOS might be tempted to cash in if a big enough offer arrives for the academy graduate.

The report states Manchester United will depend on £80 million for Mainoo, as he does have plenty of top-draw suitors waiting in the wings. Bayern Munich and Chelsea were keen in January, while Garnacho attracted massive interest from the Blues and Napoli.

Should Manchester United sell their homegrown stars?

The idea here to part ways with some of the considerable homegrown talents points to the need to be fluid in the transfer market when the summer window opens. In their current state, Manchester United needs to be more cautious than before, as the sales of their stars like Mainoo and Garnacho will ensure they have enough funds to be freer in the market.

While the fans may not like the immediate decision should talents like Mainoo depart, it might be the right call for Manchester United’s long-term squad building. Hence, the idea here might not be popular, but there are ways to prove it is effective in the future.
