Bayern Munich loan fee demands scuppered Manchester United move for Mathys Tel

Manchester United wanted to sign 19-year-old French attacker Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich during the winter transfer window.

Mathys Tel eventually ended up joining Tottenham Hotspur, and a report from Sky Sports has claimed that Manchester United’s move for the Frenchman collapsed because of the demands of the German club.

Bayern Munich were holding out for a loan fee of £5 million, and they were unwilling to include a buy option in the deal. Manchester United decided to walk away from the move in the end.

The 19-year-old is highly rated across Europe, and he could prove to be a quality acquisition for Tottenham if he manages to adapt to English football. It remains to be seen whether Manchester United are left regretting their decision to abandon their pursuit of the youngster.

The Red Devils are in desperate need of attacking reinforcements, and signing Mathys Tel would have been a superb option for them. The French attacking sensation is versatile enough to operate across multiple roles, and he could have added some much-needed cutting edge and unpredictability to their attack.

Manchester United needed to sign an attacker

Manchester United allowed Marcus Rashford and Antony to depart from Old Trafford on loan in the winter transfer window. The Red Devils need more depth in the attacking unit, and not signing a quality attacker this past winter could prove to be a big mistake for them. United struggled during the first half of the season, and they needed to improve their squad during the winter transfer window, perhaps by signing Mathys Tel.

It will be interesting to see if they can get their season back on track with improved performances during the remainder of the 2024/25 season. It is highly unlikely that they will secure UEFA Champions League qualification for the 2025/26 campaign, and they should look to finish as high as possible in the table. They are currently in the mid-table positions.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old was not a regular starter for the Bavarian club, and he will look to play more often for Tottenham. It will be interesting to see if he can continue his development with regular football at the North London club.
