Manchester United eye late deal for Douglas Luiz, move unlikely

Manchester United are reportedly interested in completing a deadline-day move to sign 26-year-old Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz from Serie A club Juventus.

According to an update by the Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel, Douglas Luiz is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. So, the Juventus midfielder has emerged as a target, although a late deal will unlikely see the light of day.

Douglas Luiz and his Juventus troubles

Douglas Luiz has struggled to hit the ground running since joining Juventus from Aston Villa last summer. The South American midfielder was one of the best players in the Premier League when he left the West Midlands outfit but has been a dud in Serie A thus far.

The 26-year-old has managed only 656 minutes of game time across 19 appearances across all competitions thus far this term. However, Luiz’s stock in the market remains high, with several well-known clubs across Europe eager to secure his services in the winter transfer window.

Recent reports have linked the Brazilian international with Arsenal, Chelsea, and Manchester City. However, Manchester United are eager to beat their Premier League rivals in the race to secure Luiz’s services before Monday’s winter transfer deadline.

Premier League return on the horizon?

Manchester United’s interest in Douglas Luiz makes sense. The Red Devils have been scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the winter transfer window. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen have become peripheral figures this season, while Ruben Amorim has assigned an attack-minded role to Kobbie Mainoo.

So, Manuel Ugarte can do with a new partner, and Manchester United need a new midfielder before the winter transfer window shuts down. Luiz has thus emerged as a viable target for the Premier League heavyweights. However, according to Sami Mokbel, a winter deal will unlikely see the light of day.

The reliable journalist has suggested that the “prospect of an agreement with Juventus is not close”. So, it will be interesting to see if Manchester United can quickly identify an alternative to the 26-year-old Brazilian international as they look to bolster their midfield unit in the winter transfer window.
