Barcelona considering Santiago Gimenez move

La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly interested in signing 23-year-old Mexican international Santiago Gimenez from Eredivisie club Feyenoord.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Santiago Gimenez is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a striker ahead of the summer transfer window. So, the Feyenoord attacker has emerged as a target, with the Blaugrana mulling over pursuing the Mexican international, with the Eredivisie club demanding around €50 million to part ways with him.

The rise and rise of Santiago Gimenez

Santiago Gimenez has established himself as one of the best players in the Eredivisie since joining Feyenoord from CD Cruz Azul in July 2022. The Buenos Aires-born striker has gone from strength to strength in the last three and a half years, having been prolific in the final third for the Dutch club.

The 23-year-old has enjoyed another impressive campaign thus far, contributing to 19 goals in 19 appearances across all competitions by finding the back of the net 16 times and providing three assists. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe.

Widespread reports have linked the Mexican international with well-known Premier League outfits like Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. In addition, the Feyenoord striker has emerged as a target for Barcelona, with the Eredivisie club demanding around €50 million to part ways with him.

La Liga adventure on the horizon?

Barcelona’s interest in Santiago Gimenez is understandable. The Catalan giants are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window due to Robert Lewandowski’s advancing years. While the veteran Polish attacker has been excellent thus far this season, he is in the twilight of his career.

In addition, Hansi Flick does not have a backup for Lewandowski, thus necessitating the addition of a striker in the summer transfer window. So, several candidates, including Samu Aghehowa, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar, with Gimenez also a viable target.

Feyenoord’s starting price of €50 million is not prohibitive, and Barcelona should muster the funds to raise the required sum to sign the 23-year-old Mexican international. However, it is unclear if Gimenez is Barcelona’s top target to bolster the offensive unit.
