Real Madrid turned down chance to sign Kyle Walker this month

Real Madrid reportedly knocked back the opportunity to sign 34-year-old English defender Kyle Walker from Manchester City in the winter transfer window.

According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, intermediaries offered Real Madrid the chance to sign Kyle Walker on loan from Manchester City until the end of the 2024/25 season. However, the reigning La Liga champions were not interested in the veteran full-back, who has completed a move to Serie A club AC Milan this week.

The rise and rise of Kyle Walker

Kyle Walker has been one of the best full-backs in the world for nearly a decade. A native of Sheffield, the Englishman rose in prominence during his stint with Tottenham Hotspur after the North London club signed him from boyhood club Sheffield United. However, the veteran defender’s stock skyrocketed during his spell with Manchester City.

Manchester City signed Walker from Tottenham in July 2017, and he has come leaps and bounds in the last seven and a half years. The 34-year-old has turned out over 300 times for Manchester City while chipping in with six goals and 23 assists. However, he grew disillusioned at the Etihad amid a dreadful 2024/25 campaign.

Walker asked Manchester City to part ways with him in the winter transfer window, as he wanted to embark on a new adventure in Europe. The English full-back has joined AC Milan on loan until the end of the 2024/25 season. However, Real Madrid also had the opportunity to secure his services.

Real Madrid could have landed Walker

Recent reports suggested Real Madrid mulled over a winter loan move for Kyle Walker. However, MARCA has claimed that the Merengues were not interested in signing the Englishman and turned down the chance to sign him from Manchester City this month. Even though Dani Carvajal’s season-ending knee injury has left a gaping hole in the right-back unit, Trent Alexander-Arnold remains the top option for Real Madrid.

As for Walker’s move to AC Milan, Emerson Royal and Davide Calabria have blown hot and cold for the Serie A club. In addition, recent reports have linked Emerson with a move away from San Siro, with Everton and Fulham interested in him. So, Walker should become the first-choice right-back for the Rossoneri soon after his move.

The Serie A giants have officially announced Walker’s arrival, and Manchester City will hope he plays well enough to compel the Rossoneri to trigger the purchase option in the loan agreement. As for Real Madrid, Alexander-Arnold remains Los Blancos’ top target to bolster the right-back berth.
