Celtic keen on re-signing Kieran Tierney, wages a stumbling block

Scottish champions Celtic are reportedly keen on re-signing 27-year-old Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney, although his £80,000-a-week wages pose a problem.

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Kieran Tierney is the subject of interest from Celtic. The Scottish champions are keen on re-signing the Arsenal full-back, with the out-of-favour wide player also keen on reuniting with Brendan Rodgers at his former club. However, the player’s £80,000-a-week wages pose a problem for the Hoops.

The rise and fall of Kieran Tierney

Kieran Tierney has endured a topsy-turvy ride since joining Arsenal from Celtic in August 2019. While the Scot hit the ground running at the North London club, fitness issues have stunted his progress in the last half a decade, forcing him to steadily drop in the pecking order in recent seasons.

Oleksandr Zinchenko was the first player to usurp the 27-year-old, who gradually became a peripheral figure in the Arsenal squad. A loan move to Real Sociedad in the 2023/24 season helped Tierney find his feet again before he failed to secure a move away from the North London club in the summer transfer window earlier this year.

Fitness issues have continued to bother the Scottish international, who has managed only 69 minutes of game time in one outing thus far this term. However, Tierney’s stock in the market remains high, with several well-known outfits, including former club Celtic, keen on securing his services next year.

What next?

Celtic showed interest in re-signing Kieran Tierney 12 months ago before a deal failed to see the light of day. The continued eagerness to reunite with the Scot is understandable, considering Alex Valle will return to Barcelona once his loan deal with Celtic expires next year.

So, Tierney has emerged as a viable target for Celtic, with the 27-year-old wide player keen on reuniting with Brendan Rodgers. However, the Arsenal outcast’s £80,000-a-week wages pose a problem for the Hoops, as they cannot stretch their wage bill for him.

In addition, Celtic will face stiff competition for Tierney’s signature, with Real Sociedad also keen on re-signing him. Meanwhile, Arsenal will not offer a new contract to the Scottish international, and he will be available for a cut-price deal next month or a Bosman move in the 2025 summer transfer window.
