MLS upstart San Diego FC will look to sign 33-year-old Manchester City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne in the January transfer window instead of waiting until the summer.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Kevin De Bruyne is the subject of interest from San Diego FC. The MLS upstart initially mulled over pursuing the Manchester City playmaker in the 2025 summer transfer window. However, they will look to land the 33-year-old creative midfielder next month instead of waiting for the 2024/25 season to end.
Kevin De Bruyne and Manchester City: A winning machine
Kevin De Bruyne has been one of the best players in the world since joining Manchester City from VfL Wolfsburg in a deal worth £55 million in August 2015. Such has been his impact in the last nine and a half years that the veteran playmaker has made even an outlay of £55 million look like a bargain.
While the 33-year-old has struggled with fitness issues in the last few seasons, he has maintained his performance levels. De Bruyne has turned out nearly 400 times thus far for Manchester City while maintaining a stellar record of 104 goals and 171 assists.
However, the Belgian playmaker faces an uncertain future at Manchester City after entering the final seven months of his contract. While Manchester City will look to tie the talismanic midfielder to a new contract, the situation has piqued the attention of Saudi Pro League clubs and MLS outfits.
What next?
Widespread reports have heavily linked Kevin De Bruyne with San Diego FC for several months. The MLS upstart will look to follow Inter Miami’s blueprint to become a juggernaut in the league quickly. So, they are eager to sign top-class players to hit the ground running in MLS.
Hirving Lozano has already agreed to join San Diego FC, leaving the incoming club to fill two more designated spots. While De Bruyne is a target for them, they also want to secure Mohamed Salah’s services, with the club’s owner, Sir Mohamed Mansour, sharing close ties with the Liverpool attacker. Meanwhile, San Diego FC will look to land De Bruyne next month.
While the MLS upstart can secure De Bruyne’s services in a Bosman move next summer, they do not want to wait and are eager to accelerate the move to land him. However, prising the 33-year-old Belgian playmaker away from Manchester City midway through the season might be a tall order.
