Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City could make a move to sign Liverpool summer transfer target Martin Zubimendi.
According to a report from Football Insider, Manchester City could look to sign Martin Zubimendi to reinforce their midfield. Pep Guardiola’s team are interested in the services of the Liverpool target and they are confident that they can persuade the Spanish international to make the move to England.
Zubimendi has been a part of the Real Sociedad setup since his childhood days. He came up the ranks at some pace and has been a constant feature in their first team since the summer of 2020. The 25-year-old has already featured in over 200 matches for them.
The defensive midfielder’s consistent performances had put him on Liverpool’s wishlist. The Reds were desperately looking for a new number six and they were in talks with the Spaniard. They had struck a deal with Sociedad and he looked set to move to Anfield but Zubimendi eventually turned it down.
The Merseyside club were left in no man’s land. While multiple reports suggest that Liverpool remain interested in his services, they have suffered a massive blow as Manchester City have entered the race for his signature.
City could look to lure Zubimendi
Guardiola’s team are looking to reinforce their midfield in the upcoming transfer window. Rodri picked up a serious knee injury at the start of the season. He is expected to be out for a while. With the Ballon d’Or winner unavailable, City are a bit short in the centre of the park.
While Mateo Kovacic is an ideal cover, people at the club feel they need an upgrade in that position. As a result, they have prepared a list of potential targets and Zubimendi is a part of that list.
City could look to persuade the Spanish international to move to England in January despite turning down an opportunity to move to Anfield just six months back. Playing for one of the world’s best teams, especially under Guardiola’s guidance, could be a significant factor in attracting the Sociedad star to Manchester.
The Spanish club were reluctant to lose him in the summer having sold Mikel Merino. While their stance hasn’t changed, City are set to test their resolve.
