Federico Gatti is reportedly on the verge of signing a new contract with Serie A giants Juventus, dealing a blow to Aston Villa and Newcastle United’s prospects.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Federico Gatti will remain with Juventus for a few more years. The 26-year-old has been a target for Aston Villa and Newcastle United in recent months. However, the two Premier League clubs’ prospects of securing his services have ended, as he will sign a new contract with the Serie A outfit.
Federico Gatti and his career so far
Federico Gatti has been among the most dependable defenders in Serie A since joining Juventus from Frosinone. The well-travelled defender had turned out for six unheralded Italian clubs before moving to the Allianz Stadium, although he had to wait for a few months before turning out for the Bianconeri.
The 26-year-old has turned out 76 times thus far for Juventus while chipping in with six goals. Gatti’s exploits for the Serie A outfit have helped him break into his national side, and he has made four appearances for Italy. Meanwhile, the player’s progress at Juventus has captured the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe, including Aston Villa and Newcastle United.
Premier League clubs keen on Gatti
Aston Villa’s interest in the Italian international is understandable. The West Midlands club might part ways with Diego Carlos next year after the Brazilian defender came close to departing from Villa Park in the summer transfer window. In addition, Tyrone Mings is on the wrong side of 30. So, Gatti is a viable target for Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United mulled over signing Federico Gatti in the summer transfer window. However, a deal did not materialise, although the continued interest makes sense, considering Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles remain on the sidelines. So, Gatti was an option worth looking at for Newcastle United.
However, Aston Villa and Newcastle United must look elsewhere for a centre-back, with Gatti on the verge of signing a new contract with Juventus. While the Serie A giants tied the 26-year-old to his current deal less than 12 months ago, they wanted to reward him with fresh terms after his exploits this season.
With Gatti not leaving Juventus anytime soon, Aston Villa and Newcastle United will not secure his services next year. It will be interesting to see who they identify as their next centre-back target.
