Fabrizio Romano rules out Chelsea move for Mads Hermansen

Fabrizio Romano has ruled out the possibility of Chelsea signing 24-year-old Danish goalkeeper Mads Hermansen next year.

According to an update by Fabrizio Romano on Caught Offside, Mads Hermansen is no longer the subject of interest from Chelsea. The reputed Italian journalist has suggested that the Blues already have too many goalkeepers and will not dip their toes in the market for a shot-stopper in the January transfer window.

Romano said, “Chelsea will not sign goalkeepers in January according to their current plan, so the information concerning Enzo Maresca moving for his Leicester keeper, Mads Hermansen, is false. They already have many in that position with Jorgensen, Sanchez, and also Penders for the future. So, it’s already set for the goalkeepers future at Chelsea and I’m not aware of negotiations with any other GK in the market so far.”

Mads Hermansen and his journey with Leicester City

Mads Hermansen has been one of the best young goalkeepers in England since joining Leicester City from Brondby IF in July 2023. A native of Odense, the Dane spent his formative years in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at Brondby IF. However, he has risen in prominence during his spell with Leicester City.

The 24-year-old played his part as Leicester City won the 2023/24 EFL Championship title and returned to the Premier League. However, Hermansen has endured a frustrating debut Premier League campaign, conceding 12 goals in six outings thus far while not keeping a clean sheet. However, the Danish goalkeeper’s stock is high, with reports linking him with Chelsea.

The Chelsea links

Enzo Maresca is reportedly an admirer of Mads Hermansen after coaching him at Leicester City in the 2023/24 season. It is hardly surprising that the Chelsea manager likes the Dane after his exploits in the Foxes’ EFL Championship-winning campaign last term.

Reports in the summer transfer window suggested Chelsea mulled over signing Hermansen from Leicester City before securing the services of Filip Jorgensen. However, Fabrizio Romano’s comments make sense, considering the Blues have several goalkeepers in the first-team squad.

Unless Robert Sanchez leaves Chelsea next year, they will unlikely sign another goalkeeper. So, it will be interesting to see how the situation evolves in the coming months, although a January move for the 24-year-old Danish shot-stopper will not see the light of day.
