Manchester City consider re-signing Sergio Gomez

Premier League champions Manchester City could launch the offensive to re-sign 24-year-old Spanish full-back Sergio Gomez from La Liga club Real Sociedad.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Sergio Gomez is the subject of interest from Manchester City. The Premier League champions sold the Spanish full-back to La Liga club Real Sociedad in the summer transfer window. However, the in-form defender’s impressive displays have forced them to mull over triggering the buyback clause worth €20 million to re-sign him in 2025.

Sergio Gomez and his short journey at Real Sociedad so far

Sergio Gomez has immediately established himself as one of the best full-backs in La Liga since joining Real Sociedad from Manchester City in the summer transfer window. The Spaniard barely featured for the Premier League champions during his two-year stay at the Etihad.

So, it was hardly surprising that Manchester City decided to cash in on Gomez in the summer transfer window, inserting a buyback clause worth €20 million in the deal they agreed with La Liga club Real Sociedad. The 24-year-old has hit the ground running at the Reale Arena, supplying three assists in eight La Liga appearances thus far.

Meanwhile, Sergio Gomez’s exploits in La Liga have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several well-known clubs across Europe. The in-form Spanish full-back’s former club, Manchester City, might launch the offensive to re-sign him next year after monitoring his displays thus far at Real Sociedad.

Etihad return on the horizon?

Manchester City’s interest in re-signing Sergio Gomez is understandable. While the Premier League champions sold the Spaniard in the summer transfer window, they did not sign a replacement for him. So, Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake remain the only left-back options in Pep Guardiola’s squad.

With Gvardiol and Ake primarily being centre-backs, Manchester City must dip into the market for a recognised left-back. The in-form Real Sociedad defender has thus emerged as a viable target for Manchester City, considering they can re-sign him for a cost-effective sum.

While money has never been an issue for Manchester City, they will not spurn the opportunity to sign a top-notch left-back for as little as €20 million. However, it will be interesting to see if the Premier League champions trigger the buyback clause to re-sign the 24-year-old Spanish defender.
