Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly considering a winter move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, a target for Arsenal and Liverpool.
According to a report by TEAMtalk, Martin Zubimendi is the subject of interest from Manchester City. Arsenal and Liverpool are also keen on signing the Real Sociedad midfielder next year. However, the Premier League champions will look to steal a march on their rivals for the Spanish midfielder, who will cost around €60 million.
The rise and rise of a late bloomer
Martin Zubimendi has been one of the best players in La Liga since breaking into the first-team squad at Real Sociedad. The Spaniard had to be patient before establishing a foothold in the senior squad at the Reale Arena, making his bow for the Basque outfit after turning 20.
The 25-year-old has been a mainstay at the back for Real Sociedad for several seasons, turning out nearly 200 times thus far for La Real while chipping in with nine goals and seven assists. Meanwhile, Zubimendi’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City.
Martin Zubimendi in high demand
Liverpool came close to signing the Spanish international in the summer transfer window before a move failed to materialise. The continued interest in Zubimendi is understandable, considering Wataru Endo is on the wrong side of 30. In addition, the Real Sociedad midfielder reportedly regrets turning down Liverpool this past summer.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s interest in Martin Zubimendi makes sense. With Thomas Partey and Jorginho on the wrong side of 30, the Gunners need a younger alternative who can be Declan Rice’s long-term partner in the middle of the park. So, the UEFA Euro 2024 winner is a viable target for Arsenal.
However, Manchester City might beat Arsenal and Liverpool to Martin Zubimendi’s signature as they scour the market for a midfielder after losing Rodri to a long-term knee injury this past weekend against Arsenal. The asking price of €60 million, the value of the Spanish international’s release clause, should not deter Manchester City.
The Premier League champions are eager to dip their toes in the market for a midfielder in the January transfer window, with Zubimendi among their targets. It will be interesting to see if Manchester City can beat Arsenal and Liverpool to the 25-year-old Spaniard this coming winter.
