Arsenal decide against reviving Benjamin Sesko chase

Arsenal are unlikely to pursue Benjamin Sesko in future windows as Mikel Arteta does not feel the need for an outright striker.

According to Give Me Sport, Arsenal are not keen on reviving their interest in Benjamin Sesko in future windows. The Gunners were linked with the Slovenian striker during the summer, but going forwards, Mikel Arteta does not feel the need for an outright centre-forward in his system.

Arsenal to cool their interest in Benjamin Sesko?

The main narrative around Arsenal’s summer window was the need to sign a new striker, something Mikel Arteta did consider for sometime before moving on. The Gunners had links to some big-name stars like Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Victor Osimhen, but they only realistically tried for Benjamin Sesko.

Despite making an approach for Sesko as they saw an opportunity with his £55 million release clause, the striker did not leave RB Leipzig. The main reason for that might have been the fact that Arteta wasn not considering Sesko as his guaranteed striker and that Kai Havertz was the expected starting centre-forward.

Sesko subsequently signed a new deal with £92,000-a-week wages until 2029, which will make him an even more expensive acquisition in the future, given his new deal does not have a release clause. However, there is a reported ‘gentleman agreement’ between the striker and Leipzig to let him leave for an acceptable offer next summer.  Chelsea were also keen on the forward and could be in the mix during future windows.

While some recent reports stated that Arsenal are still interested in Sesko, the club are cooling their interest in the Slovenian striker. Hence, there is a lesser chance of the Gunners chasing Sesko in future windows, particularly in January or next summer.

Mikel Arteta does not want an outright striker

The idea that Arsenal are cooling their interest in Sesko does have more significant implications, as it appears Arteta is not overly keen to sign an outright striker in the near future. The Spanish tactician wants to keep faith in Havertz and Gabriel Jesus going forwards, which will see him strengthen the attack differently.

Such a stance could open the doors for the likes of Chelsea or others to make their move, especially with the Blues failing to sign a new first-choice striker this summer. However, should by the end of the current season Arteta feels that a marquee striker is what the team needs to improve their prospects, then he will target one. In that case, Sesko could come into the equation again alongside other prominent names.
