La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly considering a move to sign 27-year-old Dutch midfielder Jerdy Schouten from PSV Eindhoven.
According to a report by Spanish outlet MARCA, Jerdy Schouten is the subject of interest from Barcelona. The Catalan giants remain in the market for a holding midfielder heading into the two transfer windows in 2025. So, the Dutchman has emerged as a target for the Blaugrana amid his exploits for PSV Eindhoven and his country.
Jerdy Schouten and his journey so far
Jerdy Schouten has established himself as one of the best players in the Eredivisie since joining PSV Eindhoven from Bologna in August 2023. A native of Spijkenisse, the Dutch midfield spent his formative year in his homeland and graduated from the youth division at ADO Den Haag.
However, the 27-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with Bologna, spending four years with the Serie A club. Schouten has been a mainstay in the middle of the park for PSV Eindhoven in the last 12 months, turning out nearly 50 times thus far while chipping in with five goals.
Schouten has also become a regular for the Netherlands, making 13 appearances for the Oranje. Meanwhile, the Dutchman’s exploits for his club and country in the last 12 months have not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including FC Barcelona.
Barcelona interested in Schouten
Barcelona’s interest in Jerdy Schouten is understandable. The Catalan giants have failed to fill the void left by the departure of Sergio Busquets last year. Since then, Andreas Christensen, a makeshift holding midfielder, has been the best player for Barcelona in the position, thus signalling the need for a new signing.
So, several candidates, including Thomas Partey, have emerged on Barcelona’s radar, with Schouten also a viable target. The report has claimed that the 27-year-old Dutchman has a market value of €25 million. However, considering he has a contract with PSV Eindhoven until June 2028, the Eredivisie champions will likely demand more than €25 million to part ways with him.
It will be interesting to see if the Dutch midfielder becomes the top target for Barcelona to bolster the holding midfield berth. However, Schouten is a viable target as the Catalan giants continue to monitor his progress.
