Manchester City ready to sell Matheus Nunes for £40 million

Manchester City are willing to sell Matheus Nunes for more than £40 million as he’s surplus following the return of Ilkay Gundogan.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City are ready to offload Matheus Nunes following the return of Ilkay Gundogan. The Premier League champions are willing to cash in on the Portuguese midfielder for a fee of more than £40 million. However, there are no reports of any concrete interest from elsewhere.

Manchester City to sell Matheus Nunes?

Matheus Nunes was a late signing for Manchester City last summer when they lost Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona and failed in their pursuit of Declan Rice. The club only made their decision to splash 53 million on the former Wolves man once they lost out to Arsenal for Rice, as they sought to replace the departed German midfielder.

Nunes hasn’t been particularly impressive for Man City since his arrival, starting only 14 times out of his 31 games last season. Pep Guardiola does not prefer to have him any more, and it appears the £53 million 2023 signing is only a bit-part player. Hence, the club were willing to sell him this summer, as many expected them to land a new midfielder at all costs.

After many links, including to stars like Bruno Guimaraes, Manchester City have re-signed Gundogan from Barcelona on a reported free transfer. The German’s arrival directly impacts Nunes’ future, and now the club are willing to accept a bid in excess of £40 million.

For that price, Man City will be taking a substantial hit on their investment, as they do not want to further deplete his valuation by making him play less in the current campaign. While Man City are willing to sell him, there are no indications whether any credible suitors are interested in the midfielder or if anyone is willing to pay the required price tag.

Saudi clubs could target Nunes

As there are no credible outlets suggesting anything about Saudi Arabian clubs showing an interest in Nunes, they might angle a move. The Saudi Pro League clubs could target late additions from the European leagues, probably after the latter’s window shuts at the weekend.

They are certainly capable of paying what’s required to sign Nunes, and should that materialise, he could join his former Wolves teammate Ruben Neves in that country. For now, there are no news of any credible clubs showing an interest, although that could change in the course of the coming few days.
