Chelsea have agreed a deal in principle with Villarreal for goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, as all but a pending medical remains to seal the move.
According to HITC, Fiilp Joprgensen is close to becoming a Chelsea player after an agreement was struck with Villarreal for about £20 million. The Swedish-born Dane is keen on the switch to Stamford Bridge, as medical is all that remains before the deal is finalised on all fronts.
Chelsea to sign Filip Jorgensen
Chelsea was not particularly looking for a new goalkeeper, but have now decided to splash on a new stopper. Reports from earlier in the window pointed at many notable names like Aaron Ramsdale and Diogo Costa, but it appears they have settled for Villarreal star Filip Jorgensen.
There were stories indicating Chelsea had essentially agreed a deal, and Fabrizio Romano confirmed the same, with the Blues set to pay around £20 million for the keeper. The Stamford Bridge outfit have agreed a deal in principle for the Swedish-born Dane to become their new keeper, as he will come in to provide competition for the likes of Robert Sanchez.
Jorgensen has had a fruitful last 18 months, and despite having a €45 million release clause in his deal at Villarreal, Chelsea have found a way to reach an agreement. Whether the £20 million they are about to pay seems like money worth the keeper remains to be seen, as there are plenty of expectations from fans and others for the Dane to perform right from the get-go.
He’s not the one the fans would have envisaged seeing in a Chelsea shirt, considering the links to many others, but their confidence in the keeper shows he might be up there with his quality. Villarreal might see this deal as a positive and could re-invest some of the money in finding a replacement.
Filip Jorgensen set for Chelsea medicals
Chelsea will likely close their pursuit of keepers once the Jorgensen deal is over the line. The stopper will not undergo a medical test before finalising terms and signing his contracts. The Blues also had Mads Hermasen on their list before tying up a deal for Jorgensen, which shows they were serious about signing a new keeper.
Whether Jorgensen will come into this side as the starting keeper ahead of the new season remains to be seen. New manager Enzo Maresca had earlier indicated that Robert Sanchez would hold the No.1 spot. However, that was before they began pursuing Jorgensen, meaning things could still change on that front.
