Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen are eyeing a bosman move for former Liverpool defensive mainstay Joel Matip.
According to Florian Plettenberg, Bayer Leverkusen are keen on strengthening their backline ahead of next season with an experienced central defender and they have their eyes set on Joel Matip. With the veteran defender available for free, Xabi Alonso’s team are looking to make the most out of it.
Matip’s time at Liverpool
Matip made a name for himself at FC Schalke 04 after coming up their youth ranks. He made the move to Premier League giants Liverpool back in 2016 and went from strength to strength. During his time in England, he formed a dependable partnership with Virgil van Dijk.
The duo together were integral to all the success they had under Jurgen Klopp. He featured in over 200 matches for the Reds and won multiple titles with them. Unfortunately, the recent seasons didn’t go according to plan for him. He struggled with injuries and went down the pecking order.
The Merseyside club decided against extending his contract and he has officially left the club as a free agent. Matip is currently on the lookout for his next destination.
Leverkusen want to sign free agent Matip
His time at Anfield might have ended but the 32-year-old still has a lot of football left in him. With the experienced campaigner available for free, Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen are looking to add him to their squad.
The German giants had an exceptional season last time out as they only lost once across all competitions. Alonso’s men ended Bayern Munich’s dominance and lifted the Bundesliga title without suffering a single defeat in the league. Now they are preparing to defend their title and compete in the Champions League.
To maintain the levels reached last time out, Alonso wants to add more experience to his backline. He is interested in having Matip as a part of his squad. Despite his recent injury history, the Spanish manager feels his experience could come in handy.
Leverkusen have already held initial talks with the player regarding a move. With Alonso pushing hard and an exciting project under progress at the German club, it does seem to be a great opportunity for the former Liverpool star.
