Tottenham interested in Mario Hermoso; Aston Villa, Chelsea make tentative approach

Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing free agent Mario Hermoso while rivals Aston Villa and Chelsea have also enquired about him.

According to Radio Punto Nuovo via Calcio Napoli 24, Tottenham are interested in the services of former Atletico Madrid star Mario Hermoso. They are considering a Bosman move for the Spanish international but are not the only English club keen on him, with Aston Villa and Chelsea also in the mix.

Hermoso came up the ranks at Real Madrid. While things did not work out for him at the club, he managed to become one of the mainstays in the team of their city rivals Atletico Madrid following his move from Espanyol in 2019.

Over the last five years, he featured in over 170 matches for Diego Simeone’s team and even contributed towards 16 goals. The Spaniard turned out 45 times last season and racked up over 3,800 minutes of first-team action. Despite being an integral part of their first team, Atletico decided against extending the 29-year-old versatile defender’s stay at the club.

Mario Hermoso parted ways with the Colchoneros at the start of the month following the expiration of his contract. The Spanish defender is free to decide his next club, and it seems there is a significant amount of interest from the Premier League in his services.

Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Chelsea keen on Hermoso

Tottenham are one of the clubs that have been linked with Mario Hermoso. While their interest seems dormant at this stage, it could get serious in no time as they do need more depth at the back. Ange Postecoglou has already signed two centre-backs over the last two windows but he still wants another defensive option to ensure they can challenge the best teams in the county.

The Australian manager also seeks another left-back option and with Hermoso capable enough to solve both problems they could knock on his door soon. Meanwhile, rivals Chelsea and Aston Villa have already contacted the player’s entourage to know more about a potential transfer.

The Blues seek more experience at the back to help out their young stars, while Unai Emery is an admirer of Mario Hermoso, and having seen him up close during his time in La Liga, the Aston Villa manager wants him at his disposal at Villa Park.
