Aston Villa closing in on signing Mario Hermoso

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are closing in on the signature of Atletico Madrid defensive star Mario Hermoso.

According to a report from AS, Aston Villa have started planning for an important transfer window as they look to take the next step under Unai Emery. The English club are looking to reinforce their squad and Mario Hermoso is one of the names on their wishlist.

Villa are all set to secure Champions League football for next season and they are looking to ensure they have enough depth and quality in their ranks. As a result, they are looking to add the Atletico Madrid star to their squad.

Hermoso’s time at Atletico Madrid

Things didn’t work out for Hermoso at Real Madrid but the switch to Espanyol did wonders for him. His impressive performances for the Barcelona-based club resulted in a move to Diego Simeone’s team in the summer of 2019.

He has been a constant feature at the back under the Argentine manager and has even helped them win La Liga back in the day. The 28-year-old’s ability to feature as a left-back as well as a centre-back is what makes him a very important player for Atletico Madrid.

But, he might not have a future at the club. His contract with the Spanish outfit runs out at the end of the season and there are no signs of a potential extension. As a result, he is expected to be available as a free agent and Aston Villa are looking to make the best of the situation.

Aston Villa want to sign Hermoso

The English club have made a lot of progress under Unai Emery. He has transformed the club and his team are all set to finish inside the top four of the Premier League. They want to add more depth to their defence and feel the experience and versatility of Hermoso could be of great use to them.

Aston Villa are looking to sign him as a free agent ahead of next season and they are reportedly close to acquiring his services. The 28-year-old is attracted to the Premier League because of the exciting style of play.

On top of that, Villa already have a lot of Spanish people involved at the club, manager Unai Emery, sports general director Monchi along with the likes of Pau Torres and Alex Moreno. They could even offer him a significant pay rise and even that might help them land him at the club.
