Real Sociedad reach agreement to sign Sergio Gomez

Real Sociedad have been keen on signing 23-year-old out-of-favour Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez this summer.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, La Liga club Real Sociedad have secured an agreement to sign Sergio Gomez. La Real will pay a fee of around €9 million for the Premier League winner, and Manchester City have inserted a 15 per cent sell-on clause as well as a buyback clause in his contract.

Gomez needs to play regularly, and a move to Real Sociedad would be ideal for him. He is unlikely to start for Manchester City every week. Meanwhile, the decision to insert the buyback clause could prove to be an intelligent one. If he manages to impress in La Liga and develop into a quality player, the Premier League champions will be able to buy him back in the near future.

Real Sociedad are a top club competing at a high level, and the move could prove to be hugely beneficial for Gomez. The Spaniard needs regular first-team exposure at this stage of his career, and the Basque outfit will be able to provide him with that opportunity. So, it is hardly surprising that he has been keen on joining Real Sociedad.

Sergio Gomez could be a bargain for Real Sociedad

The €9 million package seems quite reasonable for a player of his potential, and the Spanish outfit will be happy to have negotiated a nominal price for a prodigious talent like Gomez. If he manages to hit the ground running in Spanish football and fulfil his tremendous potential in the coming seasons, the transfer could look like a major bargain.

The deal is expected to be completed soon, and the two clubs are now working to iron out the final details before the deal can be signed. It will be interesting to see if Manchester City decide to bring in a quality replacement for him.

They could certainly use more depth in the defensive unit. Manchester City deployed Josko Gvardiol as their left-back quite often last season, and they are now lacking in depth in the position. They should prioritise signing a quality left-back before the summer transfer window closes.
